Chapter Eleven:
What Kind of Parents Will You Be?
During this time, our great grandfather passed away. It had been a long time since I saw or talked to Aunt Charlotte or Kristen, but I knew they would be coming in for the funeral. I was extremely nervous to see them. I still couldnât stand Kristen, but I really missed Aunt Charlotte.
The funeral was devastating. We grew up close to our Pawpaw Ray because all our family gatherings were at his house. We would spend hours at his house during the holidays, playing baseball or kickball. Everyone had so much respect for him. Dad, even though he didnât always get along with momâs side of the family, respected Pawpaw Ray and would never show up to his house intoxicated, and neither would Mom. It was a safe zone for everyone. He was an amazing man that could be strict and stern but had a heart of gold.
There was not a dry eye in the funeral home, including Pawpaw, who, even after divorcing Grammie, stayed close with him. I had never seen Pawpaw show an ounce of emotion, especially shed a tear, before Pawpaw Rayâs funeral. It was the first time Mom and Aunt Charlotte had ever seen him cry, also. Our family on our momâs side was never the same after losing him. He was the glue that kept that side of the family together, and it showed after his passing. He had five daughters and two sons, my great aunts and uncles and Grammie. After his passing, there was a huge fight about his house and all his belongings that created a major split in the siblings that still to this day is not resolved; some of them do not have anything to do with each other. The family I grew up with is not anything like it was when I was younger in so many different ways.
I spent most of my time going back and forth between Momâs and Lindseyâs houses. I spent most days with Lindsey, though. Mom and Hailey had met her and loved her, too.
During this time, Stewart fell off the sober wagon. He was back in his addiction. Around the same time, Momâs neighbors called the cops saying there was a meth lab next door to them. Next thing you know, I was getting a call from Hailey, panicking, saying there were tons of cops at the house, searching the inside. Nothing was found, of course. No one was running a meth lab, so I wasnât sure what the neighborâs problem was.
Mom broke up with Stewart, then this incident happened, and she decided it was time to find a new place to live. I moved in with Lindsey full time. Hailey and Mom moved into an apartment. Lindsey co-signed the lease, since Mom couldnât get approved by herself.
I felt disappointed in Stewart because I had grown close to him and cared about him. I hated to witness how much he struggled with his addiction and also with his mental health diagnosis.
